Perinatal Mortality
- Birth rate for Nigeria is 37.269 births per 1000 people,
- Nearly 10% of global new-born deaths occur in Nigeria (UNICEF)
- Perinatal mortality rate is a very useful index for assessing the quality of antenatal care, the utilization of such services and the availability and development of maternity or obstetric services
- Nigeria is among the top ten countries which together contribute 54% of total world births and unfortunately also account for 67% of all Stillbirths.
- Nigeria has rates between 39 – 130 per 1000 (Developed nations< 10 per 1000)
- Major causes of perinatal mortality could be screened for and managed during pregnancy. Examples include: hypertensive disorder cervical incompetence, congenital abnormalities, blood group incompatibility, intrauterine growth restriction, and birth asphyxia

High Rocks is a ‘one stop’ centre for Fetal Medicine and Genetic Diagnosis services in Nigeria. We offer prenatal fetal screening, diagnosis and treatment services, to the pregnant women, genetic counseling and diagnosis for common genetic disorders.
Our specialists share a passion for providing exceptional, comprehensive care for mothers and babies irrespective of the condition at risk. We have dedicated trained staffs that are sensitive to the emotions of clients and families, as they sometimes have to deal with are very difficult clinical results and decisions.
High Rocks serves as the hub for network of specialists in all areas of fetal medicine and genetic diagnosis in Nigeria. Through this collaboration, the centre has been able to harness expertise for quality research, manpower training and excellent service delivery. We maintain collaborations with external partners for training, audit and provision of services that may not be locally available.
We are the centre that has the largest experience in fetal medicine and genetic practice in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa.

PRENATAL SCREENING AND DIAGNOSIS OF COGENITAL MALFORMATIONS (BIRTH DEFECTS)
- Congenital malformations affects about 2-5% of all pregnancies
- About 20% of still birth and neonatal deaths in developing countries are due to congenital malformations.
- Congenital malformations are abnormal physical conditions present at birth and significant enough to be a problem
- They could be caused by a mix of factors including genetic environmental or combination.
- In the vast majority, the cause is unknown
- All pregnancies are at risk of congenital malformation irrespective of background factor such as maternal age or family history.
- None invasive screening such as anomaly scan, maternal serum biochemistry and nuchal translucency scan should be offered to all pregnancies as screening tool to detect the possibility of congenital malformation.
